Phichit Province is situated 345 kilometers north of Bangkok. Today, Phichit Province is known for its agricultural produce like rice, corn, green peas, jackfruit, pomelo and mango. Centuries ago, the town of Phichit, which is the provincial capital, played an important part in the Sukhothai Kingdom. Owing to its historical importance, there are many things to see and admire in Phichit, and one such place is the Old City or Muang Kao.

The Old City today is a park and lies within the confines of the old and is now a public garden. The Old City Park is home to two of the most important monasteries of Phichit Province. You can see an 800-year old Buddha image housed in the viharn of Wat Nakhon Chum. This temple dates back to the Sukhothai era. A few hundred meters from Wat Nakhon Chum is the Wat Mahathat, which is also from the Sukhothai period. At the Wat Mahathat, one can see a ruined chedi and parts of many other monasteries.

The Old City Park of Phichit is located around 11 kilometers from the present-day town of Phichit. According to archeological finding, it is believed that the Wat Nakhon Chum was the center of oath taking during the Sukhothai period. Just 300 meters from this temple is the Wat Mahathat and many excavations there have unearthed Buddha images and pottery items.

Today the park is being promoted as an arboretum by the government and many locals and tourists go there to relax and enjoy with friends and family. The park also has some sculptures from Tai literature, which foreign tourists find very interesting.
