Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park is located on the northeast border of Phitsanulok. The park also spreads into the neighboring province of Phetchabun. Once upon a time the park was the focal point of armed wars between the Thai people due to differences in political ideologies.
Even today at Phu Hin Rong Kla, you can see evidence of the wars by way of living quarters, hospitals, schools and other facilities used by the former communists.
The park is known for its strange topography. In some places the rocky ground is very strangely shaped; with deep crevices in certain areas as if they were made by earthquakes while other places have jagged rock formation.
The park is known for its steep mountains. The mountain range that runs through the park has peaks like Phu Pangma, Phyu Lomloh, Phu Hin Rong Kla and Phu Mahn Yow. Out of these peaks, the tallest one is Phu Mahn Yow standing at 1,800 meters above sea level. The second tallest peak is Phu Lomloh at 1,664 meters above sea level.
The park is also the source of water for streams like Huay Muad Kon and Huay Luang Yai. There are also a couple of beautiful waterfalls that well worth a visit.
During the winter months from November to January, the park is quite cold and it is not unheard of the temperatures plummeting to near freezing. However, even during the other seasons, the park is cool because it is located on a high altitude.
The park has many different types of forests including mixed deciduous, dry dipterocarp, dry evergreen and hill evergreen. Given the cold climate, one can find many species of orchids flourishing in the park along with rhododendrons. You can see the flowers in full bloom in November after the rainy season and before the onset of winter.
You can find many species of wildlife in the park, though the numbers have decreases after years of fighting between the government forces and the communists. But if you are lucky, you can still see tigers, leopards, Asiatic black bears, wild boars, foxes, monkeys, wild hares, and birds like common flameback, Asian barred owlet, brown hawk owl, jungle fowl, swallows and bulbuls.
The park has facilities for food and accommodation. Those looking to camp can avail of the camping sites present within the park.
